Diploma in Funeral Service Management

The Diploma in Funeral Service Management, incorporating The Certificate in First Line Management (DipFSM), is awarded by the NAFD in conjunction with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). The award meets the requirement for a management qualification dedicated to the funeral service.

In order to study for the DipFSM a candidate must either hold the Diploma in Funeral Directing (DipFD) or be a full member of the British Institute of Funeral Directors.

The course is based on distance learning - during which 20 ILM workbooks are studied - seven one-day seminars (held in a central area) and a residential weekend in Wales.

Candidates are assessed in the following ways:

  • Satisfactory completion of ILM workbooks
  • A personal development record based on each module
  • Six work-based assignments
  • A project of no less than 3,000 words

All assignments and the project relate to funeral service management. All work is internally verified by moderators appointed by the National Association of Funeral Directors and is externally assessed by a verifier appointed by the Institute of Leadership Management.

The Certificate in First Line Management is awarded to those students who achieve an overall pass mark of 50% or above and, depending on their job specification, they are permitted to use the letters AMInstLM or MInstLM after their names.

The Diploma in Funeral Service Management is awarded to those students who achieve an overall pass mark of 60% or above, who will, in addition, be able to use the letters DipFSM.
