2007 Funeral Business Awards Winners

Independent funeral director J Pidgeon & Son of Cardiff has been voted the overall winner of the 2007 Funeral Business Awards.

Organised by the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and Citation plc, the awards are now in their third year and once again attracted a host of strong entries.

Funeral firms were invited to showcase their commitment to proactive health and safety in the workplace and this year were competing for honours in a single category, Best Attention to Health and Safety.

“The quality of the submissions was as high as ever, as we saw previous winners battling it out against firms entering the awards for the first time,” said NAFD chief executive officer Alan Slater.

“It was good to see funeral directors taking their health and safety responsibilities so seriously.”

Judging was carried out by the NAFD’s team of standards and quality managers and Citation consultants, who travelled the length and breadth of the UK to inspect entrants’ premises.

After much debate four regional winners were chosen. Ian Hazel Funerals, J Pidgeon & Son, Hayling Island Co-operative and Ken Gregory & Sons each received trophies and certificates. A Highly Commended certificate went to Hillier Funeral Services, as the judges were keen to recognise the company’s superb effort.

The overall winner of the 2007 Funeral Business Awards was then selected from the four regional frontrunners, who attended a dinner and awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on July 18 along with members of the NAFD Executive, including President Kingsley Bryant and health and safety representative Sue Saville.

The trophy was presented to Andrew Forse of J Pidgeon & Son by Bill Olner MP, Alan Slater and Adrian Brine, director of Affinity Partnerships at Citation plc.

“We congratulate J Pidgeon & Son on its extremely proactive approach to health and safety within the business and the thoroughness with which the company undertakes its duties,” concluded Mr Slater.
