NAFD President John Adams, on the final day of his presidential year, urged funeral directors across the UK to help maintain the pressure on Parliament to ensure bereavement education is considered for addition to the Religious, Health and Social Education (RHSE) curriculum in a forthcoming consultation.

Following a petition, which attracted more than 11,000 signatures, and ongoing widely publicised campaign, the Government has committed to considering the issue, saying:
“We know that experiencing bereavement at a young age can have a significant impact on a child and that schools have a role to play to help children deal with the emotional impact of such a loss.
“The Department for Education (DfE) is undertaking the first review of the RSHE statutory guidance and will consider the points made by this petition. As part of the review process, the DfE will undertake a public consultation. Respondents will be able to comment on the proposed changes and to propose additional changes for consideration.”
There is a huge opportunity here to press for positive change that will support young people who lose a loved one.
